"Differentiation of the instructional process often yield remarkable results with respect to student achievement. Over the past two months I have had the opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange with several other language assistants in Asturias; the goal of which was to extend an invaluable cultural experience to students, and to practice familiarizing themselves with the various accents of the English language. My first destination was I.E.S. Peñamayor, in the nearby village of Nava: located within a modest valley enveloped by the green and lush foothills that are characteristic of Asturias. During each class, we explored the depths of New York City and general American culture and life; focusing on the famous landmarks and world-renowned icons that have become synonymous with the “Big Apple.” Travel arrangements were on the verge of being made, thus having rendered their experience both educational and tangible; mostly in regard to the foundation of information unto which the theoretical tourist would plan their itinerary. My second exchange took place in a familiar area, I.E.S. Sanhez Lastra, the cross-town neighbor to my institute, I.E.S. el Batán, located in the heart of Asturias’ mining community. In addition to learning about the city of New York, we also touched upon Long Island and upstate New York, including analysis of the differences between the various locations surrounding the metropolitan, as well as the activities most associated with these areas such as hiking, boating, local sports, and live entertainment. The students during both exchange sessions were highly enthusiastic and made all of our efforts worthwhile. There is still one more exchange planned for this year that I am really looking forward to, overall this was a positive educational experience for both parties and I would recommend carrying out something similar if granted with the opportunity."
